Ghost Stories

Preview
Once in awhile a show comes around that hardly anyone has heard about here in the States. ADV's Ghost Stories is one of them, that is, until after it premiered at Otakon 2005. Since then, there has been a lot of talk and controversy over the show's dub.

The dub is directed by Steven Foster, who has made quite a name for himself by changing scripts in dubs in the past, with shows like Steel Angel Kurumi and Saiyuki. But with Ghost Stories, he takes it to a whole new level.

The actors do an excellent job with their roles. Hilary Haag is Satsuki, the female lead in the show, she just moved to her late mother's old house. Chris Patton plays Hajime, the perverted classmate who lives next door. Greg Ayres takes on the role of Hajime's ugly friend and Monika Rial is the overly religious Momoko with her constant yet hilarious Christian references. There is a lot to laugh at in the dub with jokes about Republicans, Jews, homosexuals and even Leonardo DiCaprio. The overall story remains the same, it's about the old haunted school, but characters personalites and lines are very different.

There is no question that Steven Foster has the potential to make a great dub, and to an extent he has done so here. However, as a big fan of dubs myself, I hope that this isn't done again in the future because I want my dubs as accurate to the original as possible. I wouldn't have a problem with this if ADV made two english tracks like they did with Super Milk-chan because that gives dub listeners the choice whether they want to listen to the altered version or not.

Viewers will make their draw their own conclusions when Ghost Stories volume 1 streets on October 25th. If this type of dub sounds interesting then chances are you will be in for a good time. However, those looking for an accurate dub will most likely find themselves disappointed with the changes that have been made. As for me, I'll stick with the japanese language track for my first viewing, but will probably give the dub a spin afterwards just for fun.
