Princess Tutu vol. 1

Review
The battle between a prince and a raven were written about in the pages of a story book. The raven escaped from the book and the prince chased after it. The prince then used a forbidden power which sealed away the raven, but shattered his own heart, scattering it's pieces all accross town.

The main character's name is duck, and she literally is one. Only with the power of her pendant is she able to take human form. If she does anything duck-like she transforms into a duck and if she touches water she transforms back into a girl. By transforming into Princess Tutu she is able to help her prince recover the pieces of his heart that he has lost.

When she comes near a heart shard, her pendant lights up and she transforms into Princess Tutu. Her transformation isn't drawn out - it's very quick and beautiful, which means I don't have a problem watching it each episode. Tutu does not fight anyone, the characters are holding onto these heart shards because they are attracted to eachother. It might sound silly, but Princess Tutu simply invites them to dance with her and in doing so they give back their piece of the prince's heart. The only issue I have with this show is that some of the characters that have the heart shards don't get much developement. But it is kind of neat how mini fairytales are created around the holders of the heart shards.

There are dark underlying tones in the themes and characters. The prince's eyes are full of sadness and without his heart he is left without any real will of his own. I didn't have any problems with the animation which actually looks quite good overall. The classical music fits the show perfectly with many good pieces. The ballet sequences combined with the matching music are really a treat to watch.

This show uses the best elements of magical girl shows and avoids many of their faults. Princess Tutu is a different kind of magical girl show; original, fun and highly recommended.
