Gantz vol. 1 | |
|
Review This show really surprised me not only by the level of violence, but with it's story and setting that quickly caught my attention. What we get here is the unedited and uncut version that wasn't able to be shown on japanese television. Unfortiantely, this release will only have two episodes a disc resulting in thirteen discs for only a 26 episode series. Gantz starts out with Kei is in class looking around at all the girls and undressing them in his mind. One of the girls points out that he has a hard on and the whole class starts laughing. I guess thats one way to introduce the main character. Kei isn't the typical "nice guy," in fact, he is quite the opposite. He is constantly thinking bad things about people. On his way home from school he is waiting to board the train when an old, drunk man falls onto the tracks. Someone he knew from his childhood jumps onto the tracks and asks him to come down and help him save the old man from an oncoming train. They get the old man to safety but they don't have enough time to get out of the way so they try to outrun the train but end up getting hit by it. It shows Kei's decapitated head fly across the station. The next scene is Kei and Masaru teleporting into an apartment room and still running as if they were trying to avoid the train. Their heads are still on and they are both really confused. There are some other people there, including a dog. They introduce themselves, and then a naked girl appears right in front of Kei. Everyone in the building died right before they appeared in the room. One of the men tells everyone to stay put and he drags the girl into the other room and attempts to rape her. Masaru goes in and stops the guy. Just then, words appear on the black ball which reads "Your lives are now over, you bastards. What you do with your new lives is for me to decide. So there you have it." The second episode, which is a direct continuation from the events of the previous episode, starts off even more bizarre than the first. The girl is still sitting in the corner naked, but has the dog's face inbetween her legs, licking like crazy. Apparently the dog made more progress than the guy did. The black ball gives them instructions to go and eliminate a green onion alien. Then the ball opens to reveal guns and uniforms. In the center of the ball there is a man sitting holding his legs to his chest and appears to be unconscious. Everyone gets teleported outside the apartment to begin the hunt and the black ball starts counting down from one hour. It gets very violent with the alien exploding when he gets shot and people getting ripped apart. Some scenes has the camera panning around the screen and zooming in and out. It just feels akward and almost as if they are trying to cover up the barely average animation. At times the environmets are done in CG and it feels very out of place with the animated characters. A lot of stuff has happened so far that hasn't been exlained. The story is really unique and it looks to only get better from here. This disc was a really crazy ride and left me wanting more. Extras
