Flame of Recca vol. 1 | |
|
Review Recca made an offer to his classmates at school, that if they could defeat him in a fight, he would be their personal ninja. When Recca is out for lunch, he sees a cute girl walking some kids near a construction site and some of the building materials fall down and are about to land on her, but he jumps in and pushes her out of the way. Recca receives a serious injury trying to protect Yanagi, but she uses her mysterious healing power to cure him. After realizing what she did for him, he starts calling her "princess" and says he will be her personal ninja. While showing Yanagi some fireworks, he gets attacked by a woman known as Kagehoshi, who helps brings out Recca's ability to use his flame. She starts manipulating other people to make them attack Recca for her own purpose. There is a sinister group that is sort of in the background in these episodes that look like they will have a more central role soon. The fights in the four episodes here are well done. The action scenes stand out with characters moving accross the screen and looking very fluid as they fight. There are also elemental properties that come into play. For instance, Recca uses his flame and some of his opponents use wind or water techniques. It adds some depth to the fighting beyond the typical karate and the effects look neat. I really enjoyed the episodes on this disc. This disc focused on introducing the cast and having Recca learn how to use his flame ability and then get stronger with it by putting that ability to use. There hasn't been much on what the larger story will be yet, it's mostly focused on the characters so far. While it's too early to make a good judgement about the series, fans of the fighting genre might want to check this one out.
Extras
The menu has a picture of Recca on the right and the menu selections on the lower left. A short 2 second clip from the show is played when moving between the subcategories on the menu, which looks a little akward. Overall:
