E's Otherwise vol. 1

Review
In the near future, the planet is run by a federation of twelve powerful corporations. And amid the general populous are psychics, meta-humans capable of converting thought into energy. People with these mutant abilities are known as E'S and considered outcasts by normal humans.

The story begins when Kai awakens in Ashurum, a military contractor that has put together an elite special forces team of E'S called AESES to bring about law and order. The first episode covers a full year of Kai being trained in many different fields such as martial arts, piloting vehicles, and using his psychic powers. Finally he is assigned his first mission, to hunt down and capture a cop killer that also has psychic powers. After capturing this criminal with a little bit of effort, he realizes he hated Ashurum alot for being a psychic and wonders why.

Back at Ashurum, Kai meets a rival psychic named Shin Lon. Shin Lon is jealous of Kai due to the superiors favoring him and giving him a mission so early, yet he doesn't see why they favor him when he seems to only have average psychic powers. However, Shin Lon suggests they favor him because of his younger sister, who is sick in the hospital, but might have incredible psychic powers. During training they're interupted and sent on a new mission; to wipe out an anti-corporate guerilla outfit from the slum town of Gald.

When they get to Gald they split up. Kai notices a little girl trapped in a burning building and saves her. He has another E'S member watch over her while he searches for some water to help put out the fire. When he returns he finds the E'S member dead and the little girl's mother with a band of humans enraged. After realizing Kai is a psychic they start firing bullets at him, but Kai manages to scare them off when he uses his powers to shake the ground.

Kai returns to complete the mission and finds Shin Lon attacking humans so he runs in front of the humans and protects them using his powers. Shin Lon becomes enraged and questions why he is trying to protect them when they hate him, then uses most of his energy and blows up the city. Kai is reported missing in action.

The next day, Kai wakes up on some island. He notices his wounds have been patched up as he's confronted by a gun poitned at him, held by Yuki, a rebel to Ashurum and other powerful companies. Yuki asks Kai why Ashurum attacked and killed the civilians of Gald. Kai realizes Shin Lon had killed them and begins to question why he was working for Ashurum and so he decides to stay with Yuki and see what Ashurum is like from the outside.

E's Otherwise has a very interesting story. These five episodes have a great amount of progression and even some character developement. The opening theme and english dub are both great. The last two episodes seemed to slow down a little bit but it was still interesting and kept me entertained.
