Divergence Eve vol. 1

Review
In the 24th century intergalactic space travel has become a reality. One of the furthest outposts known as Watcher's Nest has come under attack by an unknown force called Ghoul. The story follows a group of young female cadets that were sent to Watcher's Nest.

Struggling with economic depression on earth, Misaki couldn't find a good paying job, so she joined the military. Later she mentions that she also joined because her father once served at Watcher's Nest and was killed in an accident.

While travelling through the portal to Watcher's Nest, the cadets are attacked while sleeping by a Ghoul. As it nears Misaki she unconciously transforms into this angel-like beast and fights it off. Upon arrival the superiors of Watcher's Nest find them but cover up what happened. Misaki and the other cadets then begin their training.

Most of the cadets were accepted into Watcher's Nest from being highly skilled at several different subjects, however Misaki was a low ranking E class which is not only obsurd but apparent that there are hidden reasons to why she was allowed in. During a combat training exercise Misaki loses control of her craft and falls to the moon. There she is confronted with the unknown enemy but luckily rescued by Lt. Lyar Ertiana who's in charge of the strategic operations for the anti-ghoul unit.

After rough training the cadets get a day off so they head out to the residential area and get some ice cream. While enjoying their free time Misaki notices a section of the area obliterated and blocked off by "Keep Out" signs. She finds out that many unknown accidents like this have been occuring lately.

The show makes it apparent that the superiors of Watcher's Nest are hiding alot from the cadets and treating them like test subjects. I came to the conclusion fairly easily that they're trying to test out Misaki's transformation abilities as they always rescue her just afterwards.

Divergence Eve combines regular and good looking animation with odd computer graphics. The battle scenes felt really awkward to me as it switches back rather fast from the characters inside the ship to CG battles with ghouls. All spaceships, stations, and ghouls are done in CG, so you can expect alot of odd transitions. And it took me all five episodes of volume one before this odd style stopped distracting me.

Aside from the story I have to comment on how extremely well-endowed ALL the female characters are, if you know what I mean. There is definite fan service in this series and it's greatly expressed in the ending theme as it shows many panty shots, bathing suit scenes from behind, and other stuff of the sort. However, there is a lot of science to the show and an interesting plot with many hidden objectives.
