Summary
Junior high school girls, Miaka and her best friend Yui, find a mysterious book while at the library one day. They find a strange book titled "The Universe of the Four Gods" and begin to read it together. But before they know it, they are sucked into the book! This world they have been transported to is a lot like ancient China.

While inside the book, Miaka is told by the king of the Konan empire that if she summons Suzaku she can make her dreams come true. To do this, she must become the Priestess of Suzaku and gather all seven of the Suzaku warriors.
Review
Fushigi has one of the best stories I've seen in an anime. However, I felt it took a long time to finally gather all the Suzaku warriors together. But once they are, the pacing really begins to pick up. I was impressed by a lot of the scenes and the impact they left on me. The progression of the story and many of the events that take place are spectacular. Add in multiple well done plot twists and you are in for one incredible journey.

Being a long series, Fushigi Yugi gives a considerable amount of time to developing its characters. However, some of the characters could have used more developement. A couple of the Suzaku warriors just didn't get enough screen time. The further I got into the series, the more I found myself enjoying the characters. I also felt that the romance that develops between Miaka and Tamahome was handled really well.

Quite a few people die in this show. There are a number of moving scenes throughout the show. I cried multiple times due to some very emotional scenes. Also, there were a few times, mostly in the first half, where there would be a more serious scene going on, and then there would be some super deformed animation from the characters to lighten the mood. Usually Miaka smelling food and getting hungry, which just felt silly and out of place.

Fushigi Yugi is by no means an action show, but it does have some. Some of the scenes look good, but most don't look too great. This is because the animation isn't all that impressive - pretty average for a TV series - except for a few scenes here and there. I feel some of these scenes could have used more frames to make them more visually appealing.

Sure I had some problems with this series, but the show excels in so many areas its easy to overlook what little I felt could have been done better. I would recommend Fushigi Yugi to everyone, it's a classic. Easily one of my favorites.

Content

Language
Some profanity.
Violence
Some scenes are pretty intense and characters fight to the death. There is quite a bit of blood in some scenes.
Sex
Multiple scenes of attempted rape, undetailed nudity, and sexual situations. One of the characters is a crossdresser and there is some homosexual themes and jokes.
