Summary Daisuke is a new teacher of a third grade class. When his student Rin finds out that he doesn't have a girlfriend, she decides that she will be his, with her reason being that he walked in on her half naked. |
Review *Please note that I watched this show in Japanese without subtitles, because it hasn't been released in North America yet. My Japanese is pretty bad (taken 2 classes of it), but I found it pretty easy to follow for the most part.
Kodomo no Jikan is a controversial series in that part of the theme is sexualizing third grade girls. I don't mean simply fanservice shots, of which comes in many forms: panty shots, school swimsuits, and some nudity to name a few. Some of the jokes, and a serious part of the story deals with mature themes, especially for girls their age, of which almost all of it comes from Rin. To give you an idea of about how far it takes things, in the first episode, Rin pulls her panties down to her thighs and tells her teacher to have sex with her.
Some may write it off as lolicon or fanservice trash, but Kodomo no Jikan has some depth to it's story and characters, and it can be really sweet at times. The show is also a lot of fun during its light hearted moments. The theme lets it play with some dirty jokes, many of which are darn funny, too. I never thought a girl drinking from a water fountain could look so...wrong. Ah, had me laughing hard. It's also got its dramatic moments about Rin's family and her relationship with her teacher.
What makes Kodomo no Jikan good is its fun and likable cast. Rin is a lively little girl who seems to suffer from a bit of loneliness due to family issues. She may tell her teacher to do naughty things to her, but sometimes she also just wants a hug or to be with him. Rin's friend Kuro (female) is rich, can often be found wearing cat ears and matching tail, and likes Rin. I found Kuro to be really fun. Mimi is a shy girl-with-glasses and has big breasts for her age. She feels a bit cliched at times, but is a good addition to the trio of 9 year olds. Daisuke, the girl's teacher, is a good-natured and respectable guy.
The animation is well done and features excellent artwork. The character designs are cute and look great; I love Rin's hair. The opening and ending theme songs are fun enough that I even bought their respective singles.
The show is pretty good throughout its entire run, though I thought they could have ended this first season a bit stronger on the relationship side of things. After it ended I only wanted more because it was an enjoyable little series and it feels like we've only seen a portion of this story and that it still has a good amount left that it can tell. I'd give Kodomo no Jikan a recommendation if it seems like something you would enjoy, knowing the disturbing subject matter won't fly well with everyone. I paid over $250 to collect the Japanese version of this series and I don't regret it.
